Cabbage and Leek Soup

When not on shift, Welsh miners enjoyed working in the open air on their allotments or cottage gardens. Almost all grew leeks and cabbages, so this fresh green soup could almost be called 'Miner's Soup'. Serves 6

Chicken stock - 1.2 litres (2 pints), or vegetable stock

Leeks - 8, trimmed, washed and chopped into 2 cm (half inch) pieces

Green or Savoy cabbage - 1.25 kg (2 lb), hard stalks and outer leaves removed, chopped into 2 cm (half inch) pieces

Onion - 1 large, finely sliced

Salt and freshly ground black pepper

GARNISH: Slices of toast - 6, each cut into 12 squares

Cheddar cheese - 75g (3 oz), grated

In a large saucepan, bring the stock to the boil.

Drop in all the vegetables.

Bring back to the boil, then cover and simmer for 45 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Add salt and pepper to taste.

Ladle into 6 bowls, allowing enough vegetables in each to show just above the surface of the liquid.

The soup can be served just as it is, or each bowl can be garnished with 12 squares of toast, sprinkled with grated cheddar cheese.

Stuffed Cabbage,Jewish Recipes?

I have several recipes and none of them say to pre cook the beef. Am I supposed to make the rice beef mixture with raw meat or is it supposed to be browned first?Stuffed Cabbage,Jewish Recipes?
You have to brown the meat. I then add water and minute rice to the meat and cover until cooked. Or you can cook the rice separately. Won't take long. Don't overcook the cabbage, just separate it and boil for a little bit. Roll meat and rice in cabbage leafs and top with a little bit of tomato sauce.Stuffed Cabbage,Jewish Recipes?
Ah, go to YouTube.com and type in ';stuffed cabbage';. It will give you several videos on how to prepare this food. You don't precook the meat, you simply prepare the mixture. After you roll them you place them in a pot to boil or something like that. Here is a quick link to a video but you can look for other versions for preparation if you like (I think precooking the meat would be easier but I don't know):

CABBAGE %26amp; SALTED PORK :

Boil the cabbage leaves for about 3 minutes (in salty water)

In a pan, put butter, sliced onions, and diced salted pork (cut out the white fat).

Add cabbage. Cook on medium heat

You can also add sliced potatoes, but put them first as they are longer to cook
You can chop it up and eat it like a salad. You can just saute only cabbage in a little olive oil. You can boil it, too, but that'a a bit bland.

make a rue which is melted butter with flour to thicken then add a little milk to loosen it up and pour it over the steamed cabbage. Thats Creamed cabbage.

Another awesome recipe for cabbage is:

one ring bologna-or brats if you prefer

one head of cabbage

one box of bow tie noodles

Carrots or other veggies

First you boil your noodle and fry the cabbage in butter.

Then you slice the bologna or brats and put that into the cabbage with the veggies (after the cabbage is cooked)

Then put the drained boiled noodle in the dish add some salt and pepper and enjoy! I LOVE this dish it only takes about twenty minutes from start to finish if you use the bologna because it's already cooked!!!

Am i going to have the right results with the cabbage diet recipe if i...?

use lipton onion mushroom soup instead of just lipton onion soup? thank you soo much!Am i going to have the right results with the cabbage diet recipe if i...?
You'll lose weight if more calories are burnt off than consumed. Many such diets just aim to provide as little calories as possible, but at the cost of proper nutrition and hence dieters run the very real risk of developing various health problems in the long run. Making sensible choices in your food intake plus regular exercise is the recommended way to lose weight and stay that way. Once you stop those 'miracle' or crash diets, the weight simply returns, as if it had never gone away! Then you get caught in a vicious dieting cycle that never gives any real results.

As for the use of packaged soups, the salt %26amp; MSG levels can be very substantial and excessive sodium intake can lead to health problems with high blood pressure, diabetes, kidney %26amp; liver failure. You'll be better off just cooking your own big pot of veggie soup.Am i going to have the right results with the cabbage diet recipe if i...?
A word of caution, the cabbage soup diet can cause low blood sugar. Be sure to keep some protein on hand. Cheese sticks work nicely.
    Sounds tasty to me.
    I guess you'll survive.
I wouldn't use ANYTHING that has MSG monosodium glutamate in the list of ingredients because it's the stuff the fast food companies dump into almost all their food to get us addicted. Hate to tell you but dried foods and the commercial broths almost always have MSG in them. MSG is counterproductive to a diet because it makes you crave it but you interpret the cravings as your favorite dishes that contain MSG (though you don't know it) like a Big Mac or Cream of Mushroom soup or stovetop stuffing etc. It's evil stuff!!!!
    No.......I don't think so.
For the best tasting results I have found if you use canned beef broth along with the onion soup mixes you will get the same results. The major idea behind this and most diet's however is excerise and large amounts of water intake. My cardio Dr. has us on a carbo reduced (key word) lifestyle change and we are doing great!

You can save $$$ with store brand soup mixes. We also purchased a recumubent bike (reserchased for best price, and style found the $119.00 to be as good as the $200-300) so you can excersize while watching the evening news or your favorite show. See us couch taters have a chance!

    Hope this helped

Red Cabbage, Dried Fig %26amp; Pepita Salad

    Serves 6

    3 tablespoons pepitas (pumpkin seeds)

    1/2 head red cabbage

1 large handful bean sprouts (about 300g)

2 garlic shallots (or normal shallots), finely sliced

    Zest of 1 lemon

    10 dried figs, finely sliced

    Juice of 1 lemon

    1 tablespoon olive oil

    1 tablespoon red wine vinegar

    2 tablespoons shoyu

Toast the pepitas in a frying pan (no oil) over a medium heat. Toss frequently and watch them carefully as they tend to go from un-toasted to over-toasted very quickly.

Cut the hard stem / core thingy out of the cabbage and finely slice (this is the most tedious part of the recipe, so hang in there). Put into a large bowl with the bean sprouts, shallots, lemon zest and dried figs.

Mix together the rest of the ingredients in a seperate bowl or jam jar and pour over the vegetables. Toss through and if you can, leave for an hour before serving. It鈥檚 also very good the next day.

    try this recipe out.

    Sweet and Sour Red Cabbage

    Ingredients

    1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter

1 2-pound red cabbage, thinly sliced (about 12 cups)

    6 Tbsp sugar

    2/3 cup balsamic vinegar

    Method

Melt the butter in a large pot over medium heat. Add cabbage and saut茅 until slightly wilted, about 5 minutes. Add sugar, toss to coat evenly. Add vinegar. Reduce heat to medium-low; cover, simmer until cabbage is tender, stirring often, about 30 minutes. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

    Serves 6-8.

    Make coleslaw.

    Ingredients:

Red/Green cabbage sliced (thick or thin whichever you prefer)

    2 grated carrots

1 small onion diced finely OR 2-3 shallots diced

    1/2 red pepper/capsicum diced

    1/2 can tinned corn

    Dressing:

    1/2 cup mayonnaise

    1 tsp sugar

    1 tblspn white vinegar

    salt %26amp; pepper to taste

    fresh parsley to taste

Combine all vegetables in a bowl. Mix all dressing ingredients together in a cup or small bowl then drizzle into vegetables. Mix well and enjoy.

(You can vary amounts of vegetables for this coleslaw but may need to make less/more mayonnaise to suit. This is just an estimation)
I like to roughly chop/shred cabbage, layer it with a little honey, Asian Dressing, and a hamburger patty on top....with salt and pepper.

You could also mix a little peanut butter and asian dressing in a bowl, then honey, and drizzle over cabbage. Add red pepper flakes for spice.
try swatting the cabbage in butter or marge until tender then add diced Bacon that has been frayed of you would love it. if you want to add more flaver put the cabbige into a pan with a little red wine and rejuse a little utill a stiky the sirve with the baken mixed in.

Recipes for 1/2 head of cabbage?

I have a 1/2 head of regular cabbage that I want to use tonight. I'm looking for a nice recipe with some tang to it, perhaps a soup or salad, but not limited to that. I am willing to go to the grocery store to get ingredients that I might not have, so be creative!Recipes for 1/2 head of cabbage?
Brown about 4-6 slices of chopped up bacon in a tablespoon of olive oil. When crisp remove and drain on paper towels. But leave the fat in the pan.

In the pan, over medium high heat saute one onion, sliced thin and the cabbage shredded or sliced thing. Cover, turn heat to medium low and allow it to steam a bit in its own juices. Season with salt and pepper. Stir the vegetables occasionally and do not allow to burn. When the vegetables are fully cooked, add the bacon back in and stir and serve.Recipes for 1/2 head of cabbage?

Does anyone have a good recipe for stuffed cabbage rolls?

An old Polish lady I knew made it. I know that it had lamb, rice, and beef in it, and there was a tomato-based sauce on it, and onion in there somewhere, but I have never found a recipe that was similar or anywhere near as good.Does anyone have a good recipe for stuffed cabbage rolls?
    serves 4 (2 rolls each)

a small head of savoy cabbage

    500 g. ground lamb

    1 small onion

    1 T. butter

    4 t. minced pine nuts

    1/2 t. British mixed spice*

    1/2 t. tarragon

    1/2 t. mint

    3 T. parsley, minced

    2 T. basmati rice

100 g. mixed dried fruit (apple, apricot, prune, pear)

    to cook the rolls:

    a few lamb bones

    1 onion quartered

    salt and pepper

a tart fruit such as apple or quince, or the peel of an untreated lemon and orange

Remove the outer dark leaves of the cabbage and use a small knife to cut around the base of the cabbage. Remove eight leaves carefully. Reserve the rest of the cabbage for another dish.

Blanch the leaves, 2 at a time in boiling, salted water for 3 minutes. Remove to a bowl of cold water to stop the cooking. Drain in a colander.

Lay a leaf with the main rib up. 鈥楽have鈥?off the rib without cutting through the leaf. Repeat with all. Set aside cut side up.

Saut茅 the onion over medium heat in the melted butter until soft. Add the mixed spice, dried herbs, pine nuts and rice. Saut茅 for a few minutes, adding a spoon of water to prevent burning. Add the lamb and use a spatula to break up the meat as it cooks, mixing well with the other ingredients. Pepper well and cook for 15 minutes. Set aside.

Lay a leaf, cut side up with the stem end toward you. Place an eighth of the filling in the lower third of the leaf (stem end). Roll once over the filling, fold the sides of the leaf to the middle, covering the filling and continue to roll. Give the roll a squeeze to help retain its shape. Repeat for the rest of the leaves.

In a deep, medium sized pot, place the lamb bones and one cabbage leaf. Lay 4 of the rolls next to each other. Layer over half the onion and half of the fruit or peel. Sprinkle with a little salt and pepper well. Repeat with another layer of rolls (lay in opposite direction), onion and fruit. Pepper well.

Lay a heavy saucer on top (this helps to weigh down the rolls so they do not unroll), fill with water to the saucer and bring to a boil. Lower heat and continue to simmer gently for 50 minutes. Remove from heat and allow to rest for another 10 minutes.

Ladle a little of the broth into a deep plate and place two rolls.

Serving variation: In Poland, cabbage rolls are often served with sour cream. I think cr猫me fra卯che is tastier with these rolls or a slice of fresh soft cheese such as goat or a dollop of herbal fresh cheese such as Brisot. Garnish with a sprig of fresh herb.Does anyone have a good recipe for stuffed cabbage rolls?

1 (28 ounce) can diced tomatoes

    2 heads cabbage

Combine pork, rice, onions, pepper, garlic powder, salt and paprika in large bowl.

Steam heads of cabbage until leaves remove easily (about 5 minutes each in microwave along with 1/2 cup water, covered with plastic wrap works well) Take handfuls of meat mixture and roll up in cabbage leaves.

    Place rolls in roasting pan.

After covering the bottom of the pan, top with half of the sauerkraut and half of the tomatoes.

    Repeat with second layer.

    Pour tomato juice over top.

Cabbage and pork flavours compliment each other so perfectly in this dish. The Tangy Tomato Sauce adds not only a another dimension to the flavour but also adds a contrasting colour to enhance the presentation of the dish.

Here are two recipes I found:

    CROCK-POT STUFFED CABBAGE ROLLS

    1 lb ground beef

    1/2 lb sausage meat

    1 cup rice, uncooked

    1/2 cup bread crumbs (optional)

2 cloves garlic, (put through garlic crusher)

    1/3 tsp garlic powder

    1/4 tsp onion powder

    1/4 tsp paprika

    2 eggs

    1 1/2 teaspoons salt

1 large onion, ground with onion juice

    large cabbage leaves

    flour for dredging

    vegetable or olive oil

1 1/2 cups tomato sauce or soup

Grind day-old bread in a blender, and add seasonings (or use pre-seasoned breadcrumbs).

Grind the onion in a blender, or if you're grinding your own hamburger and pork, add the raw onion to the meat which is to be ground.

Combine all ingredients other than the cabbage.

Remove the core of the cabbage. Find a large, heavy, carving fork (2 prongs) and put it through the center of the cabbage.

Fill a very large stockpot with salted water and bring to a boil. Place the cabbage into the boiling water, leaving the fork extending. Simmer for a few minutes and remove as the outer leaves begin to turn a bright green.

The object is to cook the cabbage for as little time as possible, but long enough to tenderize the outer leaves. Remove from the water and allow to cool on a dish until the outer leaves are still hot but are cool enough to handle.

Remove as many outer leaves as you can by cutting them off at the bottom, one at a time, with a sharp paring knife. Continue to remove leaves until you reach leaves that are not flexible. Return this uncooked portion of the inner cabbage to the boiling water pot and continue as before until all the leaves are steamed and removed and prepared for the filling.

NOTE: As you remove leaves, some will tear and otherwise not be suitable for using as a wrapper. Do not discard these, as they can be used to line the pot, or you can shred them to add to the filling mixture.

At the bottom of each leaf there will be a thick stem; sliver a slice off this to thin it out (some people cut a V-notch here). The purpose is to make the base flexible so that you can roll it up.

Stuff each leaf with the filling mixture. Starting at the bottom of the leaf, roll up one turn, then turn in the sides of the leaf to cover the filling, then roll up some more until you reach the top of the leaf and have a little bundle.

Sprinkle with salt and dredge in flour. Brown in fat in a skillet (This is an optional step if you have the time).

You can now re-use the pan used to cook the cabbage rolls on your stove top or you may cook these in your slow cooker.

Layer the bottom of the Crockpot or pan with broken cabbage leaves (the ones that weren't complete or too small to use for rolling). Stack the filled cabbage leaf bundles on top of the bed of leaves, a single layer at a time. Top each layer with a few spoons of sauce or tomato soup, and repeat with another layer of leaves, another layer of cabbage rolls, etc.

Stack the bundles in their layers carefully with the end of each leaf underneath (some people fasten with a toothpick but this is not really required). Finish off the final layer with any remaining filling.

Cover and simmer on the lowest heat setting of your stove top for 2-3 hours or in the slow cooker for 4-5 hours.

Alternatively, you can bake these in the oven.

To bake, stack bundles over cabbage leaves in a casserole dish, pour on the tomato sauce or soup, cover with foil, and bake in a slow oven, 300 degrees F., for about 2 hours.

Whichever method you use to cook the cabbage rolls, be sure not to overcook, so test often and remove when the cabbage leaves are tender. If you use tomato sauce rather than tomato soup, add a teaspoon catsup to the mix.

    CORNED BEEF AND CABBAGE

    1 corned beef brisket

1 large head cabbage (preferably savoy)

    8 peppercorns

    6 cloves garlic, whole peeled

    4-5 parsnips

    1-2 turnips

    2 bay leaves

    1 pound carrots, peeled

    6 large potatoes

    1 stalk celery, thinly sliced

    3 whole cloves

    1/2 tsp Old Bay seasoning

    1/4 tsp black pepper, ground

Wash brisket. Make small X slits in the meat and insert garlic and cloves pieces.

Place the meat into a stockpot (at least 8 quarts). Cover the meat with water. Add bay leaves, peppercorns, Old Bay, 2 carrots and sliced celery. Bring to a boil, skim off foam and reduce heat to a simmer. Simmer 2-3 hours, or until meat is nearly tender.

Meanwhile, prepare vegetables. Quarter the cabbage, peel potatoes, carrots, turnips and parsnips. Slice vegetables into 2 inch chunks.

During last half hour, add remaining vegetables and cook until tender.

Drain and serve with yellow mustard.

    Filipino Lumpia

    ';This is a traditional Filipino dish. It is the Filipino version of the egg rolls. It can be served as a side dish or as an appetizer.';

    INGREDIENTS:

    1 tablespoon vegetable oil

    1 pound ground pork

    2 cloves garlic, crushed

    1/2 cup chopped onion

    1/2 cup minced carrots

    1/2 cup chopped green onions

    1/2 cup thinly sliced green

    cabbage 1 teaspoon ground black

    pepper

    1 teaspoon salt

    1 teaspoon garlic powder

    1 teaspoon soy sauce

    30 lumpia wrappers

2 cups vegetable oil for frying

    DIRECTIONS:

    1. Place a wok or large skillet over high heat, and pour in 1 tablespoon vegetable oil. Cook pork, stirring frequently, until no pink is showing. Remove pork from pan and set aside. Drain grease from pan, leaving a thin coating. Cook garlic and onion in the same pan for 2 minutes. Stir in the cooked pork, carrots, green onions, and cabbage. Season with pepper, salt, garlic powder, and soy sauce. Remove from heat, and set aside until cool enough to handle.

    2. Place three heaping tablespoons of the filling diagonally near one corner of each wrapper, leaving a 1 1/2 inch space at both ends. Fold the side along the length of the filling over the filling, tuck in both ends, and roll neatly. Keep the roll tight as you assemble. Moisten the other side of the wrapper with water to seal the edge. Cover the rolls with plastic wrap to retain moisture.

    3. Heat a heavy skillet over medium heat, add oil to 1/2 inch depth, and heat for 5 minutes. Slide 3 or 4 lumpia into the oil. Fry the rolls for 1 to 2 minutes, until all sides are golden brown. Drain on paper towels. Serve immediately.

I like cabbage and dried beef. It used to be a poor mans dish but not anymore with the price of dried beef!

1 head of cabbage and 3 or 4 potatoes cut in nice size chunks and boiled. Add a pound of chipped dried beef to the drained cabbage and potatoes. Follow any simple recipe for a basic white sauce but you will want to double it or even triple it so there is a lot to go around. When the white sauce is finished mix it together thoroughly with the cabbage, beef and potatoes. Salt and pepper to taste. With buttered rolls, it is as homey as it gets.

You can follow a traditional cabbage roll recipe like blondies or you can make unstuffed cabbage rolls like I do---much easier.

Use 1/2 to 3/4 of a cabbage sliced and place the cut cabbage into a glass pie plate with a little water and salt.

Cover pie plate with Saran Wrap and microwave for 10 minutes to pre-cook the cabbage.

Next let's make torpedo shaped meatballs.

    1 1/2 lb ground beef

    1 egg

    1/4 cup cooked rice

    1/4 cup water

    1/2 cup breadcrumbs

1/2 tsp salt-- 1/4 tsp pepper

    1/4 tsp garlic powder

Mix all ingredients and shape into torpedo shaped meatballs

Fry to brown them in olive oil in a large pot

remove the burgers and set aside.

Use the same pot with the drippings and layer your pre-

    cooked cabbage with the burgers

Add 1 lg can of diced tomatoes

and if desired 1 can of tomatoe sauce seasoned

or 1 can of other type of tomatoes with juice

You need tomatoe juice to cover the burgers and cabbage.

To all of this add 1/4 cup real lemon juice and 1 cup brown sugar for a sweet and sour taste.Taste the juice and add onion powder for flavor.

2 tbsp ketchup can be added for flavor.

Stir gently and cook for 1 hour on medium heat or until done.

The flavour is just as good as stuffed cabbage rolls, but less work.

    BEEF AND GUINNESS PIE

Irish stouts produce a thick head when poured, so chill the can or bottle well before measuring to reduce the foam. It's a bit of work but its so worth it. You can finish with a really delicious stew or you can cover it with the pastry and make the meat pie. It's even better.

1 lb beef stew meat, tenderized

    2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

    1 teaspoon salt

    1/2 teaspoon black pepper

    2 tablespoons vegetable oil

3 med russet potatoes, lrg chunks

8 oz sm button mushrooms, halved

    1 large onion, coarsely chopped

    2 garlic cloves, chopped

    1 tsp thyme

    1 6oz can tomato paste

    1 陆 cup beef broth

1 陆 cup Guinness or other Irish stout

    3 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1 box of frozen puff pastry

    1 large egg, lightly beaten

Special equipment: 4 (14-oz) deep bowls or ramekins (4 to 5 inches wide) or similar-capacity ovenproof dishes

1 - Put flour, salt, and pepper in a lrg plastic bag. Add beef, turning to coat. Heat oil in a wide 5- to 6-quart ovenproof heavy pot over moderately high heat until just smoking, then dump everything from the bag into the pot and brown the meat, turning occasionally, about 5 minutes, transfer to a bowl.

2 - Add onion and garlic to pot and cook, scraping up any brown bits from bottom of pot and stirring frequently, until onion is softened, about 5 minutes. Add tomato paste and cook, stirring, 1 minute. Stir in beef with any juices accumulated in bowl, potatoes, mushrooms, broth, beer, Worcestershire sauce, and thyme and bring to a simmer, then cover and transfer to 325* oven. Braise until beef is very tender and sauce is thickened, about 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 hours. Remove the pastry dough from the freezer to thaw.

3 - Remove from oven and stir well. (At this point the stew can be refrigerated 2-3 days. Bring to room temp before continuing to step 4) Leave it sitting out to cool, uncovered, about an hour. Stir occasionally to release heat. (If stew is warm while assembling pies, it will melt uncooked pastry top.) Put a shallow baking pan on middle rack of oven and increase oven temperature to 425掳F.

4 - Divide cooled stew among 4 bowls (they won't be completely full). Spread out each pastry dough section and cut in half. It should be about 1/8 inch thick. Lightly beat the egg and brush a 1-inch border of egg wash around each square. Invert 1 square of pastry over each bowl and drape, pressing sides lightly to help adhere. Brush pastry tops with egg wash also. Bake pies in preheated shallow baking pan until pastry is puffed and golden brown, about 20 minutes.

Reduce oven temperature to 400掳F and bake 5 minutes more to fully cook dough.Besides corned beef and cabbage, what are some other good irish recipes for st. patty's day?

    1. Peel potatoes and cut them into 1/4'; dice. Cut carrots into 1/4'; dice. Coarsely chop scallions. Cut ham into 1/4'; dice. Shred cabbage.

    2. In a medium saucepan, melt butter over medium heat until hot but not smoking. Add potatoes, carrots and scallions and saute until scallions are wilted, about 5 minutes.

    3. Stir in flour and cook, stirring, for 1 minute.

    4. Add cabbage, water, broth, dill and pepper, and bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat. Reduce heat to medium-low, cover and simmer 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

    5. Just before serving, gently mash vegetables with a potato masher to thicken liquid if desired. Stir in the ham. .

    6. (Notes: I don't mash the potatoes because I prefer potato soup that way, and it is already pretty thick for me. I also have used chicken bullion and water to make the broth called for, and it has worked fine for me.).I am looking for a recipe for Cabbage ham and potato soup?

    2 c. chopped potatoes

    2 c. chopped onions

    Salt %26amp; freshly ground pepper

Add the chicken stock and boil until the potatoes are soft. Add the cabbage and simmer with the lid off for barely 10 minutes. When cool enough put the soup in the blender. Taste and add more seasonings according to taste. Add cream before serving. Do not bring to a boil. As this will spoil the taste.
